My Marleybones tester is my 17-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Ru. I am incredibly selective with the food I give her (far more so than the food I eat), and only buy her the absolute best I can afford. Marleybones is reassuringly free from grains, gluten and sugar, with no colours, fillers, flavourings, preservatives, additives, or artificial ingredients – a minimum standard for dog food in my opinion.

Ru isn't a fussy eater by any stretch of the imagination, but she does have a sensitive stomach, skin that's prone to inflammation, and her coat is in such great condition that any nutritional deficiencies would be quite obvious to both myself and my veterinarian dad who regularly gives her a once over – so I consider hers a fair trial.

At first glance, there are some obvious similarities with the other subscription dog foods I've tried. Like most, you fill out a simple survey on your dog's age, weight, breed and activity level to determine your meal plan, and your food is delivered to your doorstep each month.

I can't speak to the taste (although Ru absolutely loved every meal), but the ingredients are farm to bowl – 100% British free-range chicken, grass-fed lamb and beef and Scottish hand-reared salmon – and accompanied by superfoods like quinoa, hemp seed, wild seaweed, linseeds, kale and chia seeds. I'm a huge proponent of using superfoods and antioxidants for dogs, so this is a plus in my book.

I'm fairly confident with the quality of ingredients in all of the subscription services I've tried – although I do consider Marleybones to be a step ahead of the rest for their focus on superfoods – so I'm looking for some key differences aside from nutritional, and there are a few.

The most surprising among them is that their dog food doesn't arrive frozen, but rather in cartons that you store in a kitchen cupboard. This is a total game changer for most dog owners who have undoubtedly felt the guilt that comes with forgetting to defrost your dog's food the night before, or the fuss of travelling with cool bags for weekends away. As a plus, the cartons are 100% recyclable and plant-based – Marleybones are the world’s only dog food company with a guaranteed net-zero plastic footprint.

The second surprise is the consistency. The best quality dog foods I have tried have been relatively dry and flakey and crumble to the touch. Marleybones food is mousse-like – a result of gently steam cooking which locks in the natural moisture and nutrients. I generally prefer to use Ru's daily food allowance over treats for training and the consistency is perfect to do so.

I was so enthused after finishing the tester box that I ordered a second – for my small but sturdy 18.5kg staffy, a tester box lasted four days – to better asses if Marleybones would affect Ru's sensitive stomach in any way. Eight days in, I had a very happy pup with great digestion and her coat remains as glossy as ever. And I am one happy dog mum, now permanently signed up to Marleybones.
