Is there a more quaint corner of England than the Cotswolds? We don't think so. And for anyone in search of a bucolic break to this idyllic cluster of counties, here are our favourite hotels in the Cotswolds to choose from.

Spanning six counties (Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and north Somerset) and almost 800 square miles, the Cotswolds is Britain at its best: beautiful, sleepy villages, tea rooms, antiques shops, market towns and, of course, lots of that famous golden stone. The landscape also features meadows, rolling hills and valleys. Unsurprisingly, it’s an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - there's a reason those long, leisurely Cotswolds walks are among the most loved in the UK.

The region is home to some of the best boutique hotels in the country, including Cotswold House, a spa-enhanced retreat in Chipping Campden, and Thyme, set across a series of golden buildings, with a cookery school and a beautiful Cotswolds spa to keep guests busy.

For some history, check into the grand Ellenborough Park, which sits on parkland next to Cheltenham Racecourse, with a 15th-century manor house at its heart; or the Lygon Arms in the Worcestershire village of Broadway, which has offered shelter to various kinds of royalty in the past (both Hollywood and actual). We also love the family-friendly Woolley Grange, one of the best hotels near Bath in Wiltshire.

These are the best Cotswolds hotels for your next all-English escape amidst some of the UK's most beautiful scenery.

1

Whatley Manor, Wiltshire

whatley manor
Whatley Manor

This luxurious Wiltshire stay is near the market town of Malmesbury, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a superlative spa and immaculate gardens that include terraces, lawns and an organic kitchen plot. The country-house hotel is just a short drive away from Bath.

At Whatley Manor’s Aquarias Spa, book a treatment, then, if the weather’s fine, relax on one of the sunloungers beside the outdoor pool. If it’s a little nippy, simply retreat indoors to one of the heated stone recliners instead.

Chef Ricki Weston's tasting menu is one not to be missed, with inventive dishes using local produce – including lots plucked straight from the kitchen garden and hotel grounds (like the honey tart). British classics get a creative twist with a zero-waste ethos shining throughout – and there's even a course where you get a front row seat to watch the chefs busy at work.

The Lygon Arms, Worcestershire

Best hotels in the Cotswolds: The Lygon Arms
The Lygon Arms

Famous former guests to have called in to this Worcestershire coaching inn include Charles I, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton – and its sister property Cliveden House in Berkshire has similarly starry credentials.

The Lygon Arms
is in the village of Broadway, which is regarded as one of the region’s prettiest (and there’s certainly some competition in these parts). More modern additions to the historic building include a spa, but you’ll still be able to enjoy the heritage beside a log fire in one of the atmospheric, creaky lounges and at the vaulted restaurant, which has star chef James Martin at the helm. The hotel is very dog-friendly, with a wash station in the courtyard and lots of treats for pets.

Headshot of Caroline Lewis

Caroline Lewis has been a travel journalist for more than a decade, reviewing luxury hotels and covering destinations all over the world, but with a soft spot for Greek islands and absolutely anywhere in Italy.

Among her most memorable trips are a month spent subsisting almost solely on guacamole in Mexico, sleeping in a room made of ice in Swedish Lapland and a rather lengthy but thankfully bear-free drive across America's wild west.

She was previously deputy chief sub-editor on the print team at Harper’s Bazaar and is a long-time contributor and editor at Mr & Mrs Smith. She writes about travel for Hearst Digital titles such as Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Red, Esquire and more. She read English and Philosophy at Durham, before doing a master's degree in magazine journalism in her hometown of Bournemouth.

When she's not testing out the buzziest new hotels, she's at home in London, probably baking.
