Over a third of dogs purchased during the pandemic have never visited the park, heartbreaking new research has found.

Pet wellness company, Itch, surveyed Brits who bought or adopted a dog during the last 12 months to understand what challenges they may encounter once restrictions lift — and their findings have sparked concern as to whether dogs are getting the proper care they need.

With many owners admitting to panic buying a puppy during lockdown, their study found that 62% of lockdown pups have never been in an environment other than their home, two in five haven't yet met another dog, and 49% have never been introduced to children.

Elsewhere, they also found that a third of owners confessed to buying their dog from a puppy farm, with 40% explaining that they have regrets about their purchase. Some of the main reasons for this include owners buying dogs in haste, not fully understanding the care they need.

"The results of the research demonstrate how we need to be turning our attention to the "new normal", whenever that may be. As well as how we can help reintegrate our pups back into a post-pandemic society so they can have a rich and fulfilling life," Andrew Pinnington, CEO at Itch, told The Metro.

Dog trainer Oli Juste added: "It's extremely worrying to read that 62 per cent of 'lockdown pups' haven't been in an environment other than their home yet.

"Although you can always train an older dog new tricks, when it comes to socialisation, we only have a small window to get it done. The socialisation period needs to be done and dusted by the 16th week or about. These dogs will therefore need special attention."
