Labrador Retrievers, Bassett Hounds and Old English Sheepdogs are among the worst guard dogs due to their friendly dispositions. Some dogs have a natural instinct to protect their home, while others will happily let anyone through the front door.

According to research conducted by The Scotsman, some breeds are no good at being guard dogs, lacking the territorialism, courage and alertness required. While these pups make wonderful companions, they are not the fiercest at warding off intruders.

Taking the top spot is the Labrador Retriever, voted as the worst guard dog. Some Labs will be great guard dogs, but most will be too friendly and extroverted to be much help guarding your home. Meanwhile, Bassett Hounds are known for getting on well with everyone they meet — including strangers trying to break in.

Other breeds in the list include Golden Retrievers, Old English Sheepdogs and English Bulldogs. "The English Bulldog's forebears would have been superb guard dogs, but this is a breed that has long since had their aggression bred out of them. Now they are unlikely to even stir from napping on the couch should something untoward be happening," says the research.
