The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced its four gardens will remain open during England's third national lockdown, following latest government advice.

The gardens — including RHS Garden Wisley, RHS Garden Hyde Hall, RHS Garden Rosemoor and RHS Harlow Carr — will continue to welcome visitors in need of a nature boost. This time, however, capacity for each garden will be further reduced by 30–40% to limit the numbers of visitors in the gardens at any one time.

To avoid overcrowding, all visitors will be required to pre-book a timed entry slot in advance of their visit. Elsewhere, they will also have separate entry and exit points, floor markings and only accept card payments.

The charity explained that their gardens "offered a vital safe sanctuary to the public for their mental and physical health during these times" and is "delighted" that this has been recognised by the government.

They are also urging people to only visit the gardens in their local area, explaining: "Given the significant rise in cases of coronavirus across the UK, we ask that everyone considering visiting the gardens does not travel outside of their local area, defined in the latest government guidelines as the village, town, or part of the city where they live."

While the beautiful outdoor spaces will remain open, enclosed areas of the gardens, including Glasshouses, Alpine Houses and Bird Hides, will close from Tuesday 5th January in line with the new regulations. Play areas for young children will remain open.

Their garden centres will also remain open, giving people the chance to continue to garden and grow plants, indoors and outdoors. For those unable to visit in person, the RHS online plant shop is open for home delivery.

Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, previously explained the importance of pre-booking, saying: "We will of course be operating at a limited capacity and will have measures in place to ensure that all safety guidelines are followed because our number one priority is to support the Government's efforts to limit the spread of the virus.

"We are concerned that people will not pre-book tickets so a plea from me to anyone planning to visit an RHS Garden is that it is imperative you book a timed slot in advance on the RHS website. Sadly, we will be turning away anyone who hasn't pre-booked.

"And finally a huge thank you to all our members for your support and patience throughout this challenging time. As a charity, we couldn't possibly have looked after our nationally important plant collections or kept our Gardens looking beautiful over the past few months without your support so I wish you the most wonderful and enjoyable visits as you certainly deserve it!"
