Queen Elizabeth II once told a celebrity photographer that she 'didn't like her hands'.

British photographer Rankin, who took images of the Queen ahead of her Golden Jubilee in 2002, said that Her Majesty didn't want to hold a sword as it would mean her hands could be seen.

Speaking on the Tea With Twiggy podcast, Rankin said: "I was like, 'I really want to photograph you holding the sword,' and she said, 'I don't like my hands'. I thought, 'that's the best get out for holding the sword'.

"I'm probably not supposed to say she disliked her hands, but what I loved about her is she's so smart and everything in response that she was saying had this amazing twist to it."

Rankin's famous photograph of the Queen was loved by the royal, with many staff members at Buckingham Palace saying it was their favourite. "I got a really amazing note where the curator said my photograph of her is one of their favourites – which I think means the Palace's favourite – because she's really laughing in my picture," Rankin said.

He added that the Queen was 'brilliant' overall, even though he only spent 'five minutes' with her. "She was just so funny from the minute she walked in," he added.

Whether it's a standard royal engagement or a formal state banquet, the Queen was always seen wearing a pair of gloves for an outing. It was often thought that Her Majesty didn't want to be exposed to germs, but Rankin believes it could be because she didn't want her hands to be seen.
