Plymouth has been named the best UK city for nature, thanks to its stunning stargazing spots, National Trust sites, rare animal species, and plethora of outdoor activities.

The research, which was conducted by McCarthy Stone, gathered data from Trip Advisor to see how many outdoor activities there were in each city, plus used a filter to uncover how many parks, gardens, and nature spots there were in each.

While Plymouth took the top spot with 10 National Trust sites and four National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty on its doorstep, Southampton follows in second thanks to a number of nearby nature spots.

City-dwellers don't need to look far to enjoy the beauty of the British countryside. In fact, other places that made the study include London, Bristol, Birmingham, and Oxford. While households swapped city life for country living in the pandemic, McCarthy Stone found that many are heading back into built-up areas for work.

"From stargazing to national parks, it's amazing to see the wealth of natural hotspots which the UK has to offer in such proximity to large parts of the population," Miruna Constantinescu, National Marketing Director at McCarthy Stone, said.

"The lure of coastal and countryside developments may seem like the obvious choice for nature-lovers but, this study has shown that you can enjoy amazing nature sites on your doorstep across the UK. We understand the importance of getting outdoors, especially after living under restrictions over the past 18 months, and it's great to be able to highlight some of the UK's natural beauty."
