As the cold snap continues following record low temperatures, the RSPCA is urging pet owners to take extra precautions when heading out on a winter walk.

According to the animal charity, antifreeze and rock salt can be poisonous to pets, especially if they lick their paws after being outside. The icy conditions have resulted in many roads being gritted, but this could be harmful to our pets, including dogs and cats.

"Be aware that antifreeze and rock salt can be poisonous to pets. Wash their paws thoroughly after walking your dog in areas that may have been gritted with rock salt," explain the RSPCA.

To avoid this, it's important to thoroughly brush down their fur and paws, paying special attention to their legs and tummies too, as salt could flick up.

"It is difficult to say how much needs to be eaten for signs of toxicity to be seen. Even a small amount of pure salt can be very dangerous to pets. Ingestion can result in a high blood sodium concentration which can cause thirst, vomiting and lethargy. In severe cases there is a risk of convulsions and kidney damage," the animal charity add.

If you think you pet might have ingested some, and could be showing any signs of discomfort, the RSPCA recommends using a mild, pet-safe shampoo and warm water to wash the affected areas. Head to your local vet if you are worried.

Aside from grit, there are also some other potential problems that can occur from walking your four-legged friend outside during winter.

Older dogs can benefit from a coat or jumper to keep them warm, while reflective collars or jackets are also extremely useful while out walking at night. Don't forget to check their paws: trapped snow can be uncomfortable for them.

Icy conditions are not only confined to the roads either, as your pooch's favourite pond may now have frozen over. Even though it may look safe for them to trot over, this should be avoided as thin ice can break under their weight.
