Dog owners who are travelling by car with their pets this summer could face a fine or have their insurance invalidated if their dogs aren't safely fastened.

Rule 57 of the Highway Code reads: "When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."

Money comparison website MoneySuperMarket discovered that almost a quarter of motorists let their pets ride unrestrained. If there is an accident, drivers could be fined up to £5,000 for 'careless' driving.

"While driving with your pet in your car – whether in the boot or on a seat – might seem like a harmless way of getting from A to B, the truth is you can risk invalidating your car insurance," Rachel Wait from MoneySuperMarket, told the The Express.

"If you're in a prang with an unrestrained pet in your car, insurers may use it against you – regardless of whether it was as a direct result of the animal itself – so it’s worth being on the safe side and making sure ‘man’s best friend’ is properly restrained," Rachel continues.

From pet seatbelts to harnesses and comfortable carriers, there are plenty of ways you can keep your pet properly restrained. It is important your four-legged friend is securely fastened in the car, to ensure they don't cause any distractions while driving.

There's often a temptation for drivers to allow their dogs to sit next to them, especially when they're travelling alone with their pup. While it may seem practical to have them on the seat beside you, they are likely to cause a greater distraction.

Taking a road trip with your pet? Don't forget to get your hands on a dog-friendly car seat.
