What are the best dog breeds for owners who live in the city? While finding the perfect four-legged friend can be tricky for city-dwellers, there are many breeds that will be just at home in the city as in the countryside.

Before you adopt one, always assess whether you are able to provide a dog with enough care, attention and exercise — especially if you don't have a garden. "All dogs need their daily exercise and stimulation, so it is crucial city dogs have access to green spaces like parks on a daily basis," Bill Lambert, head of health and welfare at the Kennel Club, tells Country Living.

"Anyone looking for a dog should remember that a dog's behaviour and attitude always depend on its training, socialisation and individual personality."

Take a look at the best breeds for city-dwellers below...

"The Schnauzer makes a great pet for those residing in a city," Bill tells CL. "They have a big and kind personality and are known for being amazing companions. They need a moderate amount of exercise and would benefit from access to a garden, but will be equally content with long walks in a park."

2. Tibetan Terrier

Are you looking to adopt at Tibetan Terrier? Bill says: "They are outgoing, medium-sized dogs that make a great four-legged friend for city-dwellers with access to a garden or green space. They are lively and loyal companions that enjoy their daily exercise followed by a rest somewhere cosy."

They require up to one hour of exercise a day but will happily live in a city with owners who can give them the activity and mental stimulation they need."

"The Shih Tzu is a small, independent breed of dog originating from China.
