Looking to move to a dog-friendly area in the UK? A new study has revealed the best cities for dogs based on the quality of green space — and Southhampton has topped the list.

Interiors brand, Blinds Hut, worked alongside a specialist to analyse a number of important factors including the ratio of dog-friendly pubs, parks, groomers and vets in cities around the country.

Southhampton comes in on top, praised for its sprawling open spaces and number of dog walkers. In second place is London, thanks to its ratio of canine-friendly eateries. Manchester and Nottingham took the third and fourth spots, respectively, also recognised for their dog-friendly parks.

Dr Heather Venkat, Veterinarian Consultant for VIP Puppies said: "Pet owners should look for ways to give their dogs an outlet for their energy. Weekend getaways to the beach or hiking trails should also be considered to keep your pup healthy, even when you live in a city."

If you're house-hunting and searching for somewhere your dog will love too, take a look at the winners below.

10 top dog-friendly cities in the UK

  1. Southhampton
  2. London
  3. Manchester
  4. Nottingham
  5. Glasgow
  6. Bristol
  7. Aberdeen
  8. Liverpool
  9. Sheffield
  10. Newcastle upon Tyne

While living in a city has its benefits, it's always worth checking beforehand to see if there is enough space for your pup. Heather advises: "Consider how much space you have and if you can tend to that breed's needs. For example, a small Shih Tzu will adjust to life in a smaller apartment more easily than a giant Great Dane."
