Her Majesty The Queen has just become the second-longest serving sovereign monarch in history, overtaking Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died in 2016.

As of today (Monday 13th June), the Queen has reigned for a total of 70 years and 127 days. The title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world is currently held by Louis XIV of France, who ruled for 72 years and 110 days from 1643 until 1715.

The 96-year-old celebrated her Platinum Jubilee last weekend with a plethora of special events, including Trooping the Colour, Lighting of Platinum Jubilee Beacons, Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's, a live concert 'Platinum Party at the Palace,' The Big Jubilee Lunch and The Platinum Jubilee Pageant. While the Queen couldn't attend all of the events, she said she was "humbled and deeply touched" by the celebrations.

Writing in a letter to mark her Platinum Jubilee, the Queen said: "When it comes to how to mark 70 years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first.

"But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee."

On September 9th 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-lived British monarch, having previously surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, in 2007. Her Majesty became Queen on 6th February 1952, following her father's sudden death, and was crowned on 2nd June 1953. Aged just 25, the Queen was in Kenya at the time and became the first sovereign in over 200 years to accede while abroad.

Congratulations, Your Majesty!
