Rightmove has just revealed the most and least expensive seaside locations to buy a house, after assessing over 200 coastal locations across the UK.

And the difference in price between the most and the least expensive is rather staggering. In fact, the average asking price in the most costly location would pay for almost 14 homes in the most affordable spot.

Coming out on top, as the most expensive coastal location to buy a home, is Sandbanks in Poole, Dorset, where the average price of a property is over £1.5 million.

The neighbouring town of Canford Cliffs comes in second, at £1.2 million, with both areas boasting beautiful golden sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters.

“The areas of Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs continue to be very popular, and prime waterfront properties in Sandbanks have been doing particularly well,” says Steve Isaacs, Director at Luxury and Prestige Realty in Poole. “For those that can, the lifestyle of living in a beautiful location by the sea will always be appealing and is not to be underestimated.”

With neighbours such as Rick Stein and Harry and Jamie Redknapp, plus plenty of impressive detached villas and homes, it’s no surprise that the prices are in the millions.

On the other hand, the entirety of the top 10 most affordable seaside spots are considerably less than the current national average house price, which is £373,493 at the moment. In fact, all 10 are under £150,000.

“Whilst the pandemic-driven surge for seaside areas has calmed down and reversed back to more normal levels, areas around Great Britain’s coast continue to be popular with many people,” says Tim Bannister, Rightmove's property expert. Those hoping to relocate from the hustle and bustle of the city to a more laid-back and tranquil lifestyle may have already been pricing up a potential move.

Despite the fact that the weather might be a little more unpredictable north of the Scotland-England border, Saltcoats in Ayrshire takes the top spot as the most affordable seaside town. About an hour’s drive from Glasgow, Saltcoats enjoys sweeping views out over the Firth of Clyde and across to the Isle of Arran. In this particular spot the average house price is £114,365.

Two areas in County Durham round out the top three; Easington and Peterlee. However, Rightmove does acknowledge that Peterlee is a “price hotspot,” with prices up 15% compared to last year. So, if that’s somewhere you had your eye on, you might not want to wait too long before buying.
