A bed frame should be the centre of gravity in your bedroom – the piece around which everything else is chosen and arranged.

The UK offers no shortage of choice when it comes to buying a new bed frame, but the breadth can make the process more complex than expected.

Below is a guide to the best bed frames around, with handy categories (best budget option, best for storage, best for maximalists and so on) to help narrow the field.

Choosing the best bed frame for your bedroom

There are practical considerations that come first. Will the dimensions sit comfortably within the room? Does it incorporate useful storage, or will that need to be resolved elsewhere? And, in homes with narrow staircases or tight access, can it be delivered and assembled without unnecessary difficulty?

Beyond these fundamentals, the bed frame plays a defining role in how a bedroom feels. Upholstered designs introduce softness and a sense of enclosure, while timber or metal frames can feel lighter or more architectural, depending on their construction. The height of the base, the scale of the headboard, the visibility of the frame and its dominant colour or pattern all contribute.

What size bed frame do I need for my bedroom?

In the UK, standard bed sizes are well established: a single (90 x 190cm), double (135 x 190cm), king (150 x 200cm), and super king (180 x 200cm). While these measurements are straightforward, the way they sit within a space is less so.

A useful starting point is to allow at least 60-70cm of clearance around the bed where possible, particularly along the sides and at the foot. In small bedrooms, this may not always be achievable, in which case the proportions of the frame become more important. Low-profile designs, slimmer headboards and exposed legs can all reduce the visual weight of the bed, even when the footprint remains the same.

Do bed frames make a difference to sleep quality?

A bed frame has a direct if overlooked impact on sleep quality. Its primary role is to provide consistent, even support for the mattress. If that support is inadequate – for instance, widely spaced or flexible slats, or a frame that shifts over time – the mattress cannot perform as intended, regardless of its quality.

A smart take on a traditional upholstered bed from legendary interior designer Nina Campbell at Next. The gently shaped headboard, neatly finished with contrast piping, adds just enough definition, while the indigo fabric gives it a bit more presence than the usual neutrals. Slim legs with gold-capped feet lift it off the floor, keeping the overall look light despite the fully upholstered frame. It's a good middle ground between something purely practical and something more decorative.
