Paint colours: the right one has the power to make or break a room, changing its feel and even making small rooms feel bigger. Yet picking the perfect hue can sometimes feel like an impossible task – if only there were just 50 shades of grey to wade through. The possibilities are endless.

But if you're looking for the best paint colours for a country aesthetic, you've come to the right place.

Although I've recently moved into a city flat, my aesthetic and colour choices remain rooted firmly in the country. I'm a cottagecore girl through and through: there's just something about the warmth, cosiness and character of country-style interiors that makes me feel at home.

So I've spent the past few months scouring the Country Living archives for inspiration and deep diving into country-style paint colours, with countless swatches, moodboards and trips to my nearest decorating store.

If you're redecorating in 2026, here are the best paint colours to add a healthy dose of country charm, whilst still ensuring your room feels current...

Plaster pink

Pink is having something of a moment in interior design right now, and for good reason. Used correctly, it can be a warm neutral that's energising and soothing in equal measure.

Earthy, plaster pinks give a gloriously cosy feel in country living rooms or bedrooms. Pair with dark neutrals or rich, jewel tones to avoid it feeling overly girly or twee, though.

Artist Emily Sutton has cleverly added depth in her living room scheme, pictured, with a crimson cabinet and antique rug.

Warm white

Country-style schemes are all about warmth and cosiness – so cold, sterile whites are to be avoided at all costs. Fortunately, there are a whole host of warm neutrals that soften a room while keeping things bright and airy.

When considering how to use white in your home, look for colours with subtle yellow or beige undertones rather then cooler greys. And be sure to add interest through texture, such as distressed vintage finds and dried flowers or stems.

Earthy green

With its natural connotations, it's no secret that green brings a mood-boosting feel to interiors. But in 2026, instead of going pale, the green of the moment is rich and earthy.

Deep tones are calming and enveloping in living rooms or snugs, and allow more neutral furniture – like the Country Living at DFS Chepstow sofa and Sloane coffee table, pictured – to sing.

Sunflower yellow

Yellow can be a tricky hue to incorporate successfully, but deeper, golden tones work beautifully on woodwork for a cheerful pop of colour in a country scheme.

Steer clear of anything with overly green undertones to keep things feeling warm rather than garish.

Sage

A country classic that is perennially popular, this gently grey-green hue has seen the test of time. Sophisticated and elegant, it's basically the Cotswolds in a colour.

Greige, sage and lichen shades are particularly well suited to cabinetry and woodwork – like this clever built-in utility room storage bench in the home of interior designer Cat Earp.
