We all know the feeling... the first sunny day arrives and you're all set to enjoy some al fresco dining, until you notice the state of your garden furniture. After months out of use, algae is often the main culprit ruining the appearance of your outdoor set up.

Cleaning expert Laura Harnett, founder of eco-cleaning brand Seep, explains: "If your garden furniture has been stored in the garage over winter, it is likely to be grimy and dusty and not fit to use. Plus, anything left outside will have built up a layer of mould and mildew from wet weather".

Whatever the state of your outdoor furniture, it's prudent to give it a clean at least once a year before using it, especially if it has been sitting neglected for a few months.

Fortunately, there are some quick and simple cleaning techniques that don't require products that contain toxins. We've compiled a step-by-step guide to how to clean your garden furniture using predominantly natural materials and planet-friendly tools.

How to clean garden furniture without chemicals

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a large bowl or bucket.
  2. Use a brush (a bamboo washing-up brush works well) to scrub your furniture with this mixture. "This will remove algae and grime that has become engrained over winter," explains Laura.
  3. Next, add a dash of eco-friendly washing up liquid to a fresh container of warm water.
  4. Use an eco-friendly sponge or cloth dipped in this mix to wipe away any remaining debris.

How to clean garden cushions and parasols

  1. Pick a sunny day, so the fabric can air dry outside.
  2. Mix up a bowl of warm soapy water.
  3. Use a soft cloth to gently clean the fabric. "Don't saturate cushions," Laura advises. "Simply swipe and spot clean where needed."
