A socially distanced 'natter bench' has been installed at a park in Leeds to help combat loneliness during the coronavirus pandemic.

The bench – which is over 2.4 metres long — aims to encourage conversation and reduce social isolation. Whether people are feeling lonely, disconnected or simply want to make new friends, the bench celebrates the joy of human interaction... at a safe distance.

Situated in Hall Park, Horsforth, the idea first came after locals became aware of an elderly lady who had gone days without speaking to anyone — and they needed a way to help.

"We know more people are suffering with loneliness following the restrictions this year and installing this bench in our park specifically to meet friends, make new friends, or to encourage someone to join for a few minutes will hopefully help overcome this," Jonathon Taylor, a local councillor, told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

To ensure people are mindful of lockdown rules, a sign has been placed next to the bench reminding visitors to be respectful. While the bench is free to use by anyone, the local council explained they hope more will use it "when we come out of restrictions".

Jonathon explains: "The natter bench has been designed with social distancing in mind. Once the rules and guidelines say it is safe to do so, I'd encourage residents to take a moment and make time for a chat and brighten someone's day – I think this will be so important to isolated residents, and will make a big difference in people's lives."

He added that if the bench is a success, he hopes we will see "more in public spaces across the whole city to bring people together".

This isn't the first time we've seen this brilliant idea sweep across the UK. Back in January 2020, The Friendly Bench launched to provide a safe social space for anyone feeling isolated, lonely or at a loose end. Constructed to suit all ages and physical abilities, the bench cleverly incorporated raised plant beds so that visitors could enjoy nature while making new friends.

Let's hope we see more of these in our local parks soon.
