Ella Langley’s hit song “Choosin’ Texas” will go down in music history, and not just country music history. The 27-year-old country star from Hope Hull, Alabama, has joined icons Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey on a podium built for female artists celebrating the most weeks at No. 1.
“Choosin’ Texas” just hit a 14th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, tying with Whitney’s historic “I Will Always Love You” and Mariah’s 2005 gem “We Belong Together,” both of which also stayed in the position for 14 weeks. This means Ella is the first woman in country music to ever achieve this on the all-genre chart.
The Hot 100 chart represents the hottest songs in the United States in a given week, accounting for airplay, sales, and streaming data. An artist doesn’t have to exceed in every category to top it — if they dominate in one or two, that’s often enough. And that’s true of Ella’s smash hit, which shockingly has not found the top of the Billboard Radio Songs chart yet. (Noteworthy: Ella is also at No. 3 this week on the Billboard Hot 100 with her current single, “Be Her.”)
But this is just the latest record this song has broken. Earlier this year, Ella dominated the Hot 100, Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts at the same time, making her the first female artist ever to achieve such a feat (Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help” and Morgan’s “Last Night” are the other songs who’ve hit this mark).
While this level of success is impossible to predict — it’s the stuff most artists only dream of — Ella knew she had something magical when she wrote the song with Miranda Lambert, Joybeth Taylor and Luke Dick.
“When we got done writing that song, I said, ‘This is going to be the lead single of the record,’” she remarked in an interview with SiriusXM earlier this year. “I mean, this was far in advance from a year away from the record, for sure. And it really did. It happened that way. And we were talking the other night on the phone like, 'Wow, you can't expect something like this.’”
Something “like this” has become unprecedented, even for her.
