Tom has a long-standing connection with the team. Each August, the Tigers host a special Magnum P.I. Day in honor of his 1980s television show. Fans don Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, fake mustaches, and baseball hats in homage to Tom’s character, who was often seen onscreen wearing a Detroit baseball hat as part of his iconic costume, and the character's father was a fan of the team. Last year, he threw out the first pitch before the game.

He also spent time practicing with the team for his 1992 movie Mr. Baseball. He joined the Tigers during spring training, taking batting practice and even pinch-hitting during a game.

During his trip to the ballpark this week, Tom stopped by the press box to catch up with the announcers during the broadcast. When asked what he’s been up to since Blue Bloods ended, the 81-year-old admitted he’s been “looking for work.” “Blue Bloods is gone after 15 years, and I’m just kind of an unemployed actor looking for work.

He went on to admit he has a couple things in the works but “you don’t want to talk about them and jinx them.”

The broadcasters asked Tom about his ballpark food preferences, and he said, “I’m just an old sentimental guy. I want a hot dog. I found a beer, I found a Coors Light, but I haven’t found a hot dog.” A hot dog was quickly delivered to him, and in case you’re wondering, he takes it plain— “just a hot dog and a bun.”

This year, Magnum P.I. Day will take place on August 16. We hope to see Tom back in Detroit for the game.
