How to Make a Mint Julep for the Kentucky Derby (Or Any Time)

The classic Southern cocktail (and Derby staple) is way easier than you'd think!

Forget "Run for the Roses"—we'd run the race of our lives just for one of these mint juleps! Don't be fooled by the elegant appearance. Making a mint julep is anything but fussy. Mint, simple syrup, and crushed ice are a cool complement to a strong pour of bourbon. Though perfect for watching the Kentucky Derby or as part of a Derby-themed party on the first Saturday in May (especially when served in cute mint julep cups!), the summery drink tastes just as good when sipped any other day, out of any old glass.

The trick to making it just like the pros is to use a high quality bourbon, fresh mint (not the dried stuff) and simple syrup, which you can buy or just make in a few minutes at home — and to pour it over well-crushed ice. It's just not the same with whole cubes.

How to Make Simple Syrup

Simply (get it?) heat 1 cup water to boiling over high heat. Add 1 cup sugar and stir until sugar dissolves. Let cool 5 minutes. Store in airtight container, refrigerated, for up to 1 week.

How to Make Crushed Ice

This is, in fact, even easier: Put your ice in a blender and pulse it on high until you have lots of wonderfully tiny pieces. Strain out the excess water with a fine-mesh sieve, and then pour into your glass! Any excess ice can be kept in a resealable bag in the freezer indefinitely.

Ingredients

  • 3 mint leaves
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • 2 oz. bourbon
  • Crushed ice

Directions

    1. Step 1Combine mint and simple syrup in a mint julep glass. Muddle until mint oils are released, about 10 seconds.
    2. Step 2Add  bourbon (we used Woodford Reserve, the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby), and crushed ice. Stir to combine.
    3. Step 3Garnish with more ice and fresh mint, and if desired, lime slices.
