The practice of wassailing dates to ancient English yuletide traditions when people would go door-to-door while singing, offering a drink from the wassail bowl in exchange for gifts.

This version of wassail, a hot spiced beverage, comes in the form of a Mulled Cherry Cocktail featuring black cherry juice, allspice, and bourbon.

Ingredients

  • 1 (32-ounce) bottle pure black cherry juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 navel orange, sliced, plus more for garnish
  • 3 (1/8-inch) slices fresh ginger
  • 6 allspice berries
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, plus more for garnish
  • 1 1/4 cups bourbon

Directions

    1. Step 1Combine cherry juice, sugar, orange slices, ginger, allspice, star anise, and cinnamon in a pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until flavors have melded, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in bourbon. Let stand 30 minutes then strain, discarding solids. Serve warm, garnished with orange slices and cinnamon sticks.
